Decoding the tracking number of the parcel. Postal tracking

Track code (tracking number, postal identifier, tracking number, tracker) is a unique code that allows you to track the movement of postal items around the country/world.
According to the regulations of the "Universal Postal Union", the track number (identifier of the postal item) consists of 2 Latin letters, 9 numbers and 2 Latin letters indicating the sender's country.

The first letter serves as an indicator of the type of shipment.
The second letter serves to indicate the type of shipment, for example: air, sea, railway or as a regular letter.
The last two letters indicate the sending country.

Options for designating the type of shipment:

“C” - ordinary parcel (more than 2 kg)

"R" - registered letter (less than 2 kg)

“L” is an ordinary (express) letter, tracks starting with this letter are not tracked

“E” - express delivery (EMS), the second letter is ordinal

"V" - insured letter

"A" - letter, not tracked and not insured

"ZA...HK" — innovation of Aliexpress...With tracking only in China. (2 statuses from PR are possible; “reception” and “arrival at the place of delivery.” But the departure data, very often wrong are marked - Received)

Track numbers that start with LJ or LC are sent by USPS First Class Mail / USPS Priority Flat rate Envelope and cannot be tracked.

Receiving a parcel by Russian Post

After your parcel has arrived at your post office, you will immediately receive a “Notification” by mail about the arrival of the parcel in your name.

If you order a lot of parcels from the Aliexpress website, you can find out what exactly arrived to you by the tracking number indicated in your Postal Notice.

How to find out what's in the package?

In order to find out what exactly you received from the site AliExpress, you just need to go to “MY ORDERS”, then expand additional menu filters by clicking More filters

And we will see a field for input track number indicated in your notice.

Fill it out and press the button Search

And we will immediately see what exactly has arrived from China.

When your parcel travels from one country to another, the weight may differ by a couple of grams. And that's okay...

To track your parcel you need to take a few simple steps.
1. Go to the main page
2. Enter the track code in the field with the heading "Track postal item"
3. Click on the "Track parcel" button located to the right of the field.
4. After a few seconds, the tracking result will be displayed.
5. Study the result, and especially carefully the latest status.
6. Forecasted delivery period is displayed in the track code information.

Try it, it's not difficult ;)

If you do not understand the movements between postal companies, click on the link with the text “Group by company”, which is located under the tracking statuses.

If there are any difficulties with the statuses on English, click on the link with the text “Translate into Russian”, which is located under the tracking statuses.

Carefully read the "Track Code Information" block, there you will find estimated delivery times and other useful information.

If, when tracking, a block is displayed in a red frame with the heading “Pay Attention!”, carefully read everything that is written in it.

In these information blocks you will find 90% of the answers to all your questions.

If in the block "Pay Attention!" it is written that the track code is not tracked in the destination country, in this case, tracking the parcel becomes impossible after the parcel is sent to the destination country / after arriving at the Moscow Distribution Center / Item Arrived at Pulkovo / Arrived in Pulkovo / Left Luxembourg / Left Helsinki / Sending to the Russian Federation or after a long pause of 1 - 2 weeks, it is impossible to track the location of the parcel. No, and nowhere. Not at all =)
In this case, you need to wait for a notification from your post office.

To calculate delivery times in Russia (for example, after export, from Moscow to your city), use the "Delivery Time Calculator"

If the seller promised that the parcel would arrive in two weeks, but the parcel takes more than two weeks, this is normal, the sellers are interested in sales, and that’s why they are misleading.

If less than 7 - 14 days have passed since the receipt of the track code, and the parcel is not tracked, or the seller claims that he sent the parcel, and the status of the parcel “the item pre-advised” / “Email notification received” does not change for several days, this is normal, You can read more by following the link: .

If the status of the postal item does not change for 7 - 20 days, do not worry, this is a normal phenomenon for international postal items.

If your previous orders arrived in 2-3 weeks, and the new parcel takes more than a month, this is normal, because... parcels go on different routes, in different ways, they can wait 1 day for shipment by plane, or maybe a week.

If the parcel has left sorting center, customs, intermediate point and there are no new statuses within 7 - 20 days, don’t worry, the package is not a courier who brings the package from one city to your home. In order for it to appear new status, the package must arrive, unload, scan, etc. at the next sorting point or post office, and this takes much more time than just getting from one city to another.

If you do not understand the meaning of such statuses as Reception / Export / Import / Arrived at the place of delivery, etc., you can see a breakdown of the main statuses of international mail:

If the parcel is not delivered to your post office 5 days before the end of the protection period, you have the right to open a dispute.

If, based on the above, you do not understand anything, read these instructions again, and again, until you are completely clear;)

...or what is a tracking number

Track number is unique number, assigned to a parcel, cargo or postal item upon registration. This unique number is assigned in order to be able to track the route of the shipment, as well as find it in case of loss.

What is the tracking number for? This is what buyers and senders refer to when any difficulties arise with the delivery and transportation of a shipment, as well as if it has been damaged. By entering the track number on special tracking services, the sender and recipient can establish the exact location of the parcel at the moment, as well as track its entire path. The tracking number is located on the shipping invoice, on the payment document (receipt) or on the declaration that is issued to the sender when sending a parcel or postal item. The recipient can only find out the tracking number from the sender. When purchasing from online stores, ask for the tracking number of the shipment.

Parcels, cargo and postal items sent within one state most often have a track number consisting only of numbers. Each postal operator or courier service these tracking numbers are different. In most cases, tracking and finding a package is not difficult. The delivery time for such items is minimal and is within 1 week.

With international postal shipments, the situation is different: track numbers for international shipments in most cases comply with the requirements of the Universal Postal Union, and transportation and delivery times are much longer. This is explained not only by the long distances that the shipment must travel, but also by the fact that it will be processed by the postal services of several countries and customs control during export and import.

Types of tracking numbers

All international postal items are conventionally divided into two types:

  • Small package - the item weighs less than 2 kg.
  • Parcel - the item weighs more than 2 kg.

Also, postal items can be registered or unregistered. Registered shipments can be tracked by track number using special tracking services. Unregistered packages or parcels cannot be tracked. Private courier companies, for example, DHL, Fedex UPS, etc. always register shipments, assigning all shipments a unique track number that can be tracked using tracking services. If the shipment is carried out by express delivery service EMS, the parcel will necessarily be registered, but a small package may not be registered. Ask the sender to ensure that the shipment is registered - this will give you peace of mind and make it easier to find the parcel.

International tracking numbers

International track numbers are assigned in accordance with the S10 standard of the Universal Postal Union and contain 13 characters. The first two are letters of the Latin alphabet, followed by 9 digits, after which track number is completed by two letters of the Latin alphabet, indicating the code of the sending country. 9 digits in the international track code are not a random set, this combination consists of 8 unique digits + 1 (ninth). The last digit is a verification code, which is calculated by a special formula from the previous 8 digits.

The first Latin letter in the track number is the shipment marking. There are these types of markings:

  • “C” means sending an ordinary parcel weighing more than 2 kg.
  • “R” means registered letter or small package, weighing up to 2 kg.
  • "L" means regular letter or small package. Track numbers starting with this letter are unregistered and cannot be tracked.
  • "E" stands for Express Shipping (EMS). Parcels subject to express dispatch are tracked, and letters and small packages are quite rarely registered.
  • “V” means guaranteed (insured) letter or small package. Always traceable.
  • "A" means sending a letter or small package that is not recorded or tracked.

The international track number ends with two Latin letters, which indicate the country of the sender. The recipient's country is not indicated in the tracking number. The sending state is marked with a special code that corresponds ISO standard 3166-1-alpha-2 code. For example, CN is the code of China, SG - Singapore, HK - Hong Kong, GB - Great Britain, CA - Canada, DE - Germany, FR - France, IT - Italy, US - USA, JP - Japan, RU - Russia, UA - Ukraine.

What do international tracking numbers look like?

Examples of international tracking numbers:

  • RC356779731CN - from the markings and the last two letters in the number it follows that this number was assigned to a registered small package sent from the PRC.
  • СQ630697711CN - this number was assigned to the parcel from China.
  • EE564518664GB - marking means express dispatch EMS, and the last two letters indicate dispatch from the UK.
  • LK172747585US - this track number corresponds to a postal item from the USA, the marking means that this is a small unregistered package.
  • RJ361456831GB - Marking indicates a small registered package that was sent from the UK.

How to get a tracking number

The tracking number of the parcel can be obtained in two ways:

  1. If you are the sender of the parcel, then the tracking number of the parcel will be indicated on the invoice, declaration or payment document (receipt), which will be given to you upon dispatch at the post office or courier service office. If you send a parcel from your home using door-to-door shipping, then the track code number will be provided to you by the courier who will pick up the parcel.
  2. If you are the recipient of a postal item and buy something from a foreign online store, the sender of the parcel (seller) must provide the tracking number. It will appear in your account trading platform, where you placed your order. Often the tracking number of the parcel is sent in the form of a letter to your email specified during registration and ordering. It is important to know that the track number is provided after the parcel is sent, and not after payment for the order.

Track number is individual postal code(identifier, number) of the postal item, thanks to it, you can control the movement of the parcel at any time. Postal tracking is a mechanism that allows you to find a parcel and subsequently track it. Should know important nuance– in order for your shipment to be tracked, the track number must be of an international standard.

What does the parcel track number look like?

Parcel track number, by international standard, is always presented as a combination of Latin numbers and letters. The international parcel tracking number includes a total of four capital Latin letters and nine numbers, for example: RA125854782CN. Similar numbers are assigned to shipments coming from abroad or abroad. This is what, for example, the track number of a parcel from China should look like.

You can find out where the tracking number of your parcel is located in various ways, it depends on who sent it to you. If this is a parcel with goods from an online store, such as Aliexpress, then the seller must, after sending the parcel, indicate its track number in your order menu on the website. If a parcel is sent to you by a specific person or you are sending it to someone abroad, the tracking number will be indicated in the delivery note (declaration, receipt) that the shipping service will issue to you.

When your parcel has a track number, you can track its movement at any time. And if the parcel is lost or if any unforeseen circumstances arise, you can talk to the seller about sending the goods again, or demand a full refund.

Parcels from China without tracking numbers

The Aliexpress website sells many different necessary and interesting products at a relatively low price that you want to buy. When purchasing a product, the buyer often finds himself in a situation where he is sent a package without a track number. In this case, you just need to wait for the postman to bring a notification to the mailbox that the parcel has already arrived at the post office. All you have to do is go to the post office and receive your long-awaited order.

A parcel from Aliexpress without a track number is sent if the purchased product is very cheap, and it makes no sense for the seller to pay for a real tracked track number. It is more profitable for the seller to simply not spend extra money and send the parcel without a track number, and provide you with an empty (non-existent) track. This is often practiced when shopping on foreign websites. But it is worth considering that if such a package does not arrive, then you will never know for what reason - either the post office lost it along the way, or it was not even sent. This is the main risk that a parcel from China will not arrive without a track number.

However, if the seller is conscientious, he will definitely warn his buyer that he sent him a parcel without a tracking number. And due to such inconveniences, it can provide additional guarantees in case of loss of the parcel by postal services. But in this case, the buyer also needs to be vigilant and make sure that the buyer protection period does not expire and you manage to open a dispute to get a refund for the lost goods.

In this article we will get acquainted with all types of postal services and logistics companies whose services are used by suppliers when sending ordered goods.
