Leib Strauss was born in 1829 in Bavaria. His family was large; his father died when he was only a few years old. Leib's mother was forced to raise seven children alone. Then in America, almost everyone was looking for gold everywhere, as the gold rush flared up more and more. People from different parts of the world moved to New world with the hope of getting rich. In the face of such competition, Levi immediately decided not to interfere in the search for gold. Then the thought arose in his head that he would receive even greater benefits if he began to provide the people of America with something necessary.
In 1853, Levi set off for the shores of San Francisco with a ship full of fabrics and dry goods. All the goods were sold out along the way, and Levi was left with only one roll of canvas, which no one needed. Then Levi independently sewed the first trousers from this roll, which were so durable that the prospectors liked it, one of whom even purchased these trousers. Seeing the quality, comfort and durability, the miner’s colleagues also ordered similar pants for themselves.
Then Levi realized that this was a profitable business. That same year, together with his cousin Levi, he opened his first store, where he began offering his original pants. Then the canvas was replaced with a softer fabric, which he ordered from France. Since the fabric was from the city of Nîmes, it was called “denim” after the city.
Pants made from French material received blue and light blue shades using indigo. The first trial batch, made from French denim, sold out in record time, which surprised Strauss himself. Levi Strauss & Co. began to expand quickly and rapidly. From the very beginning of his activity, the founder of the brand began to act extremely prudently, patenting all his own inventions that he used on his products.
A new patent that generated a dizzying number of sales
At that time, Levi's pants were a little different from the ones we are used to seeing today. In any case, this was the case until 1872, when an American tailor originally from Latvia, Jacob Davis, decided to attach the most vulnerable spots on new trousers with metal rivets. Jacob, however, did not have delivery funds, since the implementation of his project required a quite impressive sum for those times - 68 dollars. Lacking funds, Davis wrote a letter to Lewis presenting the benefits of rivets. He also advised Strauss to patent the rivets as soon as possible, since every second tailor would soon be using them.
Strauss agreed to the patent. As a result, in 1873, denim pants with metal rivets became very similar to modern jeans. Levi was not mistaken again, because within a year after the patent was established, he was able to realize and sell 21 thousand pairs of jeans, which allowed him to quickly recoup the $68 spent.
Rivets have been modernized over time.
The rear rivets, for example, were removed and replaced with reinforced stitching because they were scratching the saddle and damaging furniture.
Changes
In 1886, the Levis brand introduced a new logo for its jeans, which depicted two horses eating to tear their pants. There is a legend about the origin of the logo. It is said that the idea arose after one driver connected two cars with Levis pants, thus reaching the station he needed. The new logo became an indirect witness to the durability of the pants produced by Levi Strauss & Co.
In the seventies, Levy decided to slightly change company policy and assign each 
new trouser model no. He did not want to start from the first issue, since this would mean that 20 years of work would be in vain.
