The first places in the ranking of foreign companies with the best reputation in Russia were taken by Toyota, Rolex and Bosch. The authors of the rating, analysts from the Reputation Institute, are convinced that the reputation of companies in Russia and the rest of the world is perceived completely differently

Prepared for Forbes rating According to the Reputation Institute (RI), the list of foreign companies with the best reputation in Russia in 2019 was headed by the Japanese automaker Toyota. Together with him, the top three included the Swiss watch company Rolex and the German Bosch. The leader of 2017 - Volkswagen - was ninth in this year's ranking (in 2018 it was 12th), and the Japanese Sony dropped from first place in last year's ranking to 5th.

In the aviation sector, reputational leadership has been held by Lufthansa for three years, in the financial sector by Visa, and in the entertainment sector by The Walt Disney. Toyota (automotive), Rolex ( consumer goods), ExxonMobil (oil and gas), Lavazza (food and beverage), Hilton Worldwide (hotels), 3M (industrials), Pfizer (pharmaceuticals), IKEA (retail), Intel (high technology) and DHL (logistics).

When it comes to the reputation of business sectors, the automotive sector ranks first, followed by consumer goods and high technology. In last place are finance, transport and energy. “Only 25% of people in the world believe financial institutions sincere,” notes RI. The top 100 companies with the best reputation in Russia included two payment systems (Visa and Mastercard) and HSBC bank, while global investment banks Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley did not find a place in the ranking.

On last place According to the reputation of sectors in Russia in 2019, it was entertainment and media. RI explained this by the deterioration of Russians’ attitude towards Facebook. The top 100 most respected companies included The Walt Disney Company (No. 44) and Netflix (No. 73).

At the same time, in the global ranking of companies with the best reputation, published by RI in March, The Walt Disney Company was in third place (Rolex topped the list), and Netflix topped a similar American ranking in April (Facebook, among 390 American companies considered by reputation, was in penultimate place; only The Trump Organization had a worse reputation). Netflix's rise to 22nd place in the American rankings was helped by the lightning-quick reaction of management to the accusations of sexual assault against House of Cards star Kevin Spacey - at the height of the #MeToo campaign, Netflix simply fired the actor.

“The importance of intangible assets is growing all over the world and today reputation management is the responsibility of top officials of companies,” emphasizes RI co-founder and vice president Cornelius van Riel.

Today, one failure is enough for a company's reputation to suffer. The incident at a college basketball game in the United States, when the sneaker of rising star Zion Williamson tore, resulted in more than just an injury to the player. The very next day, Nike shares fell in price by more than 1%, the company’s market capitalization fell by $1.46 billion. In the 2019 RI world ranking, the company dropped from 12th to 15th place.

This doesn't work in Russia. There are regional differences in the perception of companies in Russia and the rest of the world, RI explains. In the ranking of the most respected foreign companies on the Russian market, Nike retained 11th place. Also, “dieselgate” had a completely different impact on Volkswagen’s reputation in Russia and in the world. IN Russian rating the company dropped from first place in 2017 to 12th in 2018, but in 2019 it rose to ninth. In global and American reputation ratings, Volkswagen did not make it into the top 100 in 2018 and 2019.

The Reputation Institute has been preparing an annual study of corporate reputation since 2006. In Russia, calculations are carried out consulting company EmCo (exclusive representative of RI).

When compiling a rating of the reputation of foreign companies in Russia, more than 7,000 people were surveyed. They were asked about the activities of 143 companies selected by size and prominence. The questions asked about a person's emotional attitude toward the company (trust, respect, admiration, goodwill), perceptions of its activities (products, innovation, working conditions, management, leadership, efficiency, responsibility) and supportive behavior (including willingness to buy the company's product). Survey participants rated companies according to various criteria on a 100-point scale. An average score above 80 indicates an excellent reputation.
